Best Airport for Disneyland: How I Chose the Right Airport for My Disney Trip (My 2026 Trip Update)

Best Airport for Disneyland

The trick to being a Disney-regular is to get the logistics of the trip right. It’s not about the cute outfits you’re going to wear or the Instagrammable pictures you’re going to take. You got to take care of the small things.

And yes, choosing the right airport to visit Disneyland is a huge part of it.

A lot of people assume LAX is the go-to choice of airport because it is so near to the place and it is the largest airport around. But it’s not always so obvious.

I’ve done my research and there are plenty of airports near Disneyland that you will be spoiled for choice.

Today, I’m going to let you in on some secret tricks-of-the-trades to being a Disney adult and tell you about some top airports for Disneyland.

I Was Surprised by How Many Airports Serve Disneyland

Like every other vacationer, I automatically searched for LAX (Los Angeles International Airport) to visit Disneyland.

There were several reasons why it seemed like a good idea to me.

Firstly, it has the most airline choices. Flights are usually cheaper here even without vouchers and airplane points. And yes, since it’s the biggest I (and every one else) assume that it’s the nicest.

Also it’s only 34 miles between LAX and Disneyland, Anaheim. So you can get there easily without a rented car.

But recently I’ve discovered that there are better options.

Best Airports Near Disneyland

San Diego International AirportSAN95–100 miles (153–161 km)1 hour 45 minutes–2.5 hoursBest if combining Disneyland with a San Diego vacation

Like most first time visitors, I made the amateur mistake of thinking LAX is the best airport for Disneyland. Then I discovered there are five nearby airports in Southern California. They are listed according to proximity below:

  • John Wayne Airport (SNA) – 14–15 miles
  • Long Beach Airport (LGB) – 24–25 miles
  • Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) – 35 miles
  • Ontario International Airport (ONT) – 35–36 miles
  • Hollywood Burbank Airport (BUR) – 45 miles
  • San Diego International Airport (SAN) – 95–100 miles

Why John Wayne Airport (SNA) Became My Top Choice

It’s the Closest Airport to Disneyland

I hate driving. And my budget doesn’t cover booking a cab. I don’t care if the flights are slightly more expensive than LAX. I always choose SNA when I come to visit Disneyland. And honestly the flight tickets cost way less if you use your credit card points and miles.

So, I pick the closest airport every time. The airport is just about 15 miles from the Disneyland park and on a good day without traffic (which is rare in California) I can make it from the airport to the park in about 15 minutes tops.

Besides, the faster you arrive at your hotel, the more rested you will be, and you’ll be able to walk around the park so much more.

It isn’t just me, though. So many Disney planning resources recommend SNA as the most convenient option.

The Airport Itself Looks Much Less Stressful

Look, LAX overwhelmed me. I’m not Miley Cyrus and cannot hop off a plane here with just a dream and a Cardigan. I have luggage, I’m on a tight schedule. I usually go with friends so tempers are running high.

SNA just seems so much simpler to me. The terminals are smaller. It is easier to get your baggage claimed. The walks to the terminal are shorter. And most importantly it’s less crowded than the LAX. If I’m going to spend the next hours of my life jostling in a crowded theme park, I need as much peace and quiet as I can muster beforehand.

I’ve also noticed that the rideshare pickup is faster from SNA than it is from LAX. Although that might have just been us.

Let Me Tell You a Little Secret: Universal Studios + Disneyland Airport

John Wayne is the closest airport to Disneyland. But if you’re planning on spending time in Universal Kingdom first and then Disneyland. It might be best to land in Hollywood Burbank Airport (BUR) instead.

This airport is only 7 miles away from Universal Studios, LA. You can then get a metrolink train and a bus transfer to Disneyland.

I personally wouldn’t want to do both theme parks at once. A couple of friends and I have done this before and it was really tiring. So try on your own discretion.

So, Where Should I Fly From To Reach The Magic Kingdom?

Like I’ve explained above, the best airport for Disneyland depends majorly on your travel itinerary and budget. But here’s how I would break it down for you.

The best airport overall, according to me at least, is John Wayne airport as it is very near to Disneyland and you get there in just 20 minutes. I’ve found that avoiding rented cars is a great way to make my trip more economical. Last-mile connectivity was a huge issue when I visited last time and the cab fare just stretched my budget.

If you’re looking for cheaper and quicker flights, however, LAX is the best option. If you have family or friends whose car you can borrow while in Southern California or someone is there to take you around, then saving on flight fare is a good idea. So LAX is the way to go!

In case you couldn’t get flights to SNA or LAX airports, then a LGB is a great alternative. The flights are slightly cheaper than SNA in my personal experience and it is only half an hour drive away from Disneyland.

FAQs

What is the best airport for Disneyland?

The best airport for Disneyland depends on what you’re planning to do in Disneyland (which attractions you’re going to visit), your budget, what is included in your travel itinerary after Disneyland and other factors. But if we speak solely about distance, convenience and proximity, the John Wayne Airport (SNA) is generally considered the best overall because it’s the closest airport to Disneyland and offers the quickest transfers.

Is LAX or SNA better for Disneyland?

Again, I’d have to say the airport that’s better for you depends on what you want to save. SNA is typically more convenient due to its shorter drive and smaller size, while LAX offers more flights and often lower fares.

How far is John Wayne Airport from Disneyland?

Being the nearest, John Wayne Airport is about 14 – 15 miles from Disneyland, with a typical drive of around 15 – 25 minutes depending on traffic.

Is Long Beach Airport a good choice for Disneyland?

Oh, yes I’d definitely say so. I’ve found that Long Beach Airport is also a popular alternative thanks to its smaller terminals, relaxed atmosphere, and relatively short drive to Disneyland.

Should I rent a car when flying to Disneyland?

No, I won’t recommend it if you’re staying near the Disneyland Resort and don’t plan to explore Southern California. I have found that rideshares or hotel shuttles are more convenient than renting a car. However, if your travel itinerary is majorly about exploring California and Disneyland is just a stop along the way, then yes, renting a car would be a better option.
