I hate driving. And my budget doesn’t cover booking a cab. I don’t care if the flights are slightly more expensive than LAX. I always choose SNA when I come to visit Disneyland. And honestly the flight tickets cost way less if you use your credit card points and miles.
So, I pick the closest airport every time. The airport is just about 15 miles from the Disneyland park and on a good day without traffic (which is rare in California) I can make it from the airport to the park in about 15 minutes tops.
Besides, the faster you arrive at your hotel, the more rested you will be, and you’ll be able to walk around the park so much more.
It isn’t just me, though. So many Disney planning resources recommend SNA as the most convenient option.
The Airport Itself Looks Much Less Stressful
Look, LAX overwhelmed me. I’m not Miley Cyrus and cannot hop off a plane here with just a dream and a Cardigan. I have luggage, I’m on a tight schedule. I usually go with friends so tempers are running high.
SNA just seems so much simpler to me. The terminals are smaller. It is easier to get your baggage claimed. The walks to the terminal are shorter. And most importantly it’s less crowded than the LAX. If I’m going to spend the next hours of my life jostling in a crowded theme park, I need as much peace and quiet as I can muster beforehand.
I’ve also noticed that the rideshare pickup is faster from SNA than it is from LAX. Although that might have just been us.

Let Me Tell You a Little Secret: Universal Studios + Disneyland Airport
John Wayne is the closest airport to Disneyland. But if you’re planning on spending time in Universal Kingdom first and then Disneyland. It might be best to land in Hollywood Burbank Airport (BUR) instead.
This airport is only 7 miles away from Universal Studios, LA. You can then get a metrolink train and a bus transfer to Disneyland.
I personally wouldn’t want to do both theme parks at once. A couple of friends and I have done this before and it was really tiring. So try on your own discretion.
So, Where Should I Fly From To Reach The Magic Kingdom?
Like I’ve explained above, the best airport for Disneyland depends majorly on your travel itinerary and budget. But here’s how I would break it down for you.
The best airport overall, according to me at least, is John Wayne airport as it is very near to Disneyland and you get there in just 20 minutes. I’ve found that avoiding rented cars is a great way to make my trip more economical. Last-mile connectivity was a huge issue when I visited last time and the cab fare just stretched my budget.
If you’re looking for cheaper and quicker flights, however, LAX is the best option. If you have family or friends whose car you can borrow while in Southern California or someone is there to take you around, then saving on flight fare is a good idea. So LAX is the way to go!
In case you couldn’t get flights to SNA or LAX airports, then a LGB is a great alternative. The flights are slightly cheaper than SNA in my personal experience and it is only half an hour drive away from Disneyland.
